Original vs aftermarket spare parts: what to really choose

Ricambi originali o compatibili: guida alla scelta

What "original" really means

An original part is made by the machine's OEM, with the same part number and the same materials as the part fitted at the factory. An aftermarket part is made by a third party but engineered to match the original dimensionally and functionally.

When aftermarket is fine

A quality aftermarket part costs 30–60% less and is perfectly adequate for:

  • Drive belts (timing and flat belts).
  • Gaskets and O-rings.
  • Anti-vibration feet.
  • Standard grinder augers and throats (groups 12, 22, 32).
  • Generic accessories like product holders and blade guards.

When you need the original

  • Slicer blades: a thousandth of a millimetre off on the profile ruins the slice. Pay more for a correctly-geometried blade like the original Berkel BS933 blade.
  • Motors and coils: electrical balance is critical.
  • Electronic boards: no serious alternatives exist for digital controls.
  • Structural parts: meat plates, carriages, bases — 0.2 mm off and the carriage stops running.

How to spot a quality aftermarket part

  1. Check that the supplier lists exact dimensions and materials.
  2. Beware of prices that are too low: a proper timing belt costs at least €8–10.
  3. Look for a warranty on the spare part.
  4. Prefer specialist sellers: a generalist can't tell a group 12 from a group 22.

Our approach

We carry both originals (Berkel, RGV, Sirman, Fama, Swedlinghaus) and carefully selected aftermarket parts. If we're not sure about a spare's quality, we simply don't list it.
