The 3-start comb is the vise part that meshes with the three-start worm screw fitted under the carriage, at the front of Berkel Model P flywheel slicers. Together, screw and comb generate the vise movement during slicing: the crank connected to the gear wheel turns the screw, which through the comb moves the vise left or right according to the desired slice thickness.

When the comb's teeth are worn, the coupling with the screw loses precision: the carriage travels with play or jerks and slicing becomes uneven. In these cases the comb must be replaced to restore smooth, accurate vise movement.
