The mouth guard is the safety shield (often transparent plexiglass) fitted in front of the mincer's feed opening: it prevents hands from reaching the auger and the blade/plate assembly during operation. Standard EN 12331 requires this guard when using grinding plates with hole diameters greater than 8 mm, to prevent crushing or cutting injuries.
If the guard is broken, cracked or no longer fastens securely to the mincer's mouth, it needs to be replaced to keep the machine safe and compliant.
