The lid closes the doser chamber, the component that collects the ground coffee before it is dispensed dose by dose into the portafilter via the lever. Its purpose is to protect the ground coffee from dust, humidity and light, keeping its aroma and freshness longer, as well as preventing accidental spillage of product while the machine is in use. With continued use the lid can crack, discolor or stop closing properly due to wear at the seating points; in these cases it must be replaced to restore proper sealing and hygiene of the doser.
