This is the abrasive stone that rotates against the blade edge to restore its cutting ability: the coarse grit performs the first, more aggressive sharpening stage, removing the metal needed to straighten out an edge worn or damaged by continuous cutting. It is normally paired with a fine-grit emery wheel for the final polishing stage of the edge.
