It works together with a magnet fitted on the machine's cover or moving guard: it detects that the guard is properly closed and enables the motor to start only when the guard is in position, preventing operation with the guard open. It should be replaced when the part is worn or no longer switches correctly, which can either prevent the machine from starting even with the guard closed, or, if it fails the other way, compromise operator safety.
