Limescale build-up on the heating elements over time can cause localised overheating and eventual failure of the element: typical symptoms are cold or lukewarm rinse water, much longer boiler heating times than normal, or the safety thermostat tripping repeatedly. In these cases replacing the heating element resolves the fault; disconnect the appliance from the mains and drain the boiler before removing the flange.
