When to replace it: a burnt or shorted coil is one of the most common reasons a solenoid valve stops switching. Typical symptoms are a group that dispenses no water even though the pump runs, a valve that hums without opening, a burnt smell or a visibly blackened coil. The coil can be replaced without opening the water circuit: disconnect the electrical connector, slide the coil off the valve stem and fit the new one, always with the machine unplugged from the mains.
Before replacing it, it is good practice to check the winding continuity with a multimeter: an open circuit or an out-of-range resistance confirms the fault.
