It is the pushbutton fitted on the emery wheel pin: pressing it brings the grinding wheel into contact with the blade edge during sharpening. The 2-piece pack covers both pins of the sharpener assembly, the one for the sharpening wheel and the one for the deburring wheel.

When to replace it: the button is a part subject to mechanical wear: with use it can strip, crack or lose its grip on the pin, making the approach of the emery wheel to the blade imprecise and the sharpening inaccurate. If the button wobbles, gets stuck or is visibly damaged, it is best to replace it before ruining the blade edge with uneven sharpening.
