The wave washer is a spring washer that, fitted on the blade shaft or other pins of the slicer, takes up mechanical play and maintains the correct axial preload between rotating parts, preventing vibration and loosening during cutting. With wear it tends to flatten out and lose elasticity, causing excessive play on the shaft or abnormal noise: in these cases it should be replaced.
