The Nuova Simonelli shower plate (doccetta) is the perforated disc located under the brew group of espresso coffee machines, between the boiler and the portafilter. Its job is to distribute hot water evenly over the tamped ground coffee, ensuring a regular extraction and preventing channeling that would ruin the quality of the espresso in the cup.
Over time it becomes clogged or deformed by limescale and coffee residue: when the flow becomes irregular, uneven or asymmetric from the portafilter spout, it is a sign that the shower plate needs replacing.
