The mesh shower plate is the perforated metal disc fixed directly onto the brew group's boiler head: its function is to evenly distribute pressurized hot water over the ground coffee during extraction, ensuring a uniform infusion across the whole filter surface. With use it tends to clog due to limescale and oily coffee residue, causing uneven extraction or water leaking from the sides of the portafilter; in that case it should be cleaned or replaced.
