With wear, the bar's surface can become scored, oxidized, or lose its original ground finish: when this happens, the carriage starts sliding with friction, jerky movement, or side play, affecting the smoothness and safety of slicing. It is advisable to replace the bar when abnormal resistance or noise is noticed in the carriage's movement.
