It is a direction-reversing switch: it allows the rotation direction of the tools (whisk, hook, paddle) to be reversed, a function useful for working more complex doughs and achieving better mixing results.

It should be replaced when the reversing function no longer switches direction correctly, the button is stuck or damaged, or malfunctions occur in the mixer's control panel.
