This is the reversing switch that controls the motor's direction of rotation: in the run positions it swaps two of the three phases, making the motor turn forwards or backwards, with a central off position. On food processing machines it is the typical control of meat grinders with a reverse function, where reversing frees the worm screw when the product jams, and it is generally used on three-phase equipment where the direction of rotation must be selectable.

When to replace it: handle turning without actually switching, one running direction no longer working (burnt contact on one phase: the motor hums and does not start, or runs in one direction only), signs of overheating on the body or terminals. A reversing switch with worn contacts makes the motor run on two phases and overheat: replace it as soon as switching becomes unreliable.
