It is the triangular-profile knife-edge that acts as the pivot fulcrum in the scale's lever system: its precise edge rests on the matching seat (knife bearing) and forms the low-friction pivot point that bears the load, on which the scale's weighing sensitivity and accuracy depend.
It should be replaced when the knife edge is worn, nicked or blunted: a worn fulcrum introduces friction and play, distorting the dial reading and compromising the instrument's stability. The replacement keeps the original dimensions to ensure correct fitment on the scale.
