It is the protective disc/ring that covers the central part and rear edge of the blade, shielding its cutting edge in the area not used for slicing: a key safety element that reduces the risk of accidental contact during use and during cleaning of the disc.
With knocks or drops the blade cover can deform or get damaged, losing correct coverage of the edge; it should then be replaced to restore protection. Replacement is simple and brings the slicer back to its intended safety condition.
