In dual-stone sharpeners, the fine-grain stone is the front one and is used to finish the edge after the main sharpening pass with the coarse-grain stone: activate it for a few seconds (around 4-5) to remove the burr/step left on the blade edge. Replace it when worn, glazed, or no longer sharpening effectively, to keep the blade sharp and safe.
